visual research- Vague

Vague.
I have been working on a Logo for a music event starting up in London from may 2011.
The event is called VAGUE an is basically a monthly event that hosts dance/electro DJ's. The locations vary and the promotion is mostly through the web and posters.
I was briefed to design a "typical" british wallpaper, based on the works by William Morris and other designers of the Arts and Crafts movement. Above are some scans from drawings I produced a while ago, when i started my visual research.

8 Reasons - Zine's

For Christmas 2010 I produced magazines for every member of my family.
The topic was 8 reasons what i like about you. I produced six hand made magazines and one animation, with different styles in binding and making.
Some where produced with Ilustrator and Photoshop others entirely by hand.
They are unique and personal, and I think worked well individual presents.

RSA STUDENT DESIGN AWARD/ conflict resolution

The last three month I had to fulfil a RSA Design brief. I had to choose from four different projects, some were about designing new ways of giving (charties, etc) another one was to stop or reduce excessive  consumption or to create a way to widen school kids creativity and get them interested into design and the creative arts. Last but not least, one project was based on conflict resolution. Finding ways of agreement, and as I am a slight hippi, I decided to work on the conflict brief.

For this project, I decided to not create a way of getting rid of Conflict, I created a simple object that creates a platform of having a conflict. This object was a placemat, which simply creates a space where two or more parties can talk / write about the issues they have with one another.

The above image is the digitial version of the Placemat.
Below you can see my four boards that present the problem, the observation and insights and the use of the object.

polaroids and socks

These two images are typologies I produced during my first Year of my degree. I think they both are visually interesting and I still like them very much.

making Diary 2011

I make myself a Diary every year in December. To do that  I buy an emtpy sketchbook rip of the Hardcover and cover it in 120 gram paper, so that it becomes more soft and I dont scratch myself on the hard corners. Also that give s me a white canvas to draw and stick things on. Obviously, it can become a little repetitive after a while, drawing 5 soft lines with Pen and writing down the dates, but really 365 days is doable and I love the end-product. I am always worried I forget a day or I mess up the 30th and 31st month, but so far I have been lucky and havent done that many mistakes producing my diaries.
I got the idea from a freebee, I once got from my Mum, who got a Diary send by a German Design agency and handed it to me. Using that for one year, doodleing, sketching and writing down everything I have done brought so much joy to me that I decided to continue making these.
I am now using my fourth one so I can actually go back to everything I have done in four years! Sometimes people ask me to have a look when something happens too, as most people know about my diaries as I carry the current once around in a normal day.
This is not just to show off, haha, at the back of my diaries I leave about 40 pages empty on purpose so I can use it as a notebook too. Sometimes, especially when travelling, I stick things in to it or put photos inside of them. It hardly ever happens that I forget to fill the pages, but sometimes it takes a week or so until I find time to doodle, when that happens I write down in pencil what I have done so.
It is nice to design a Diary yourself, firstly you can adjust how much space you want for every single day, plus you can fill it up with illustrations you actually like or have produced youself.
And I can leave bank pages where ever I know beforehand that I will be travelling so that I can use that space during my trips around the world.
Funny enough that I loose or brake everything I have never lost  or forgotten my Diary, and i am determined to keep it that way.

The four images from top to bottom are:

An example of a normal doublespread page
A doublespread with an illustration I have drawn directly into the diary
The outside of my current Diary (still very clean and empty, well apart from that red wine spill)
The cover I made for a diary I made for a friend as a christmas present

two thousand eleven.

I have been a bad blogger. Not a single post this year yet. Its an absolute shame.
It is the 31st of January, so before it gets to the second month of the new Year, I am going to try to update as much as possible, so that I wont feel so bad about myself :)

It has been a stressful month, first the beginning of the new year, than the first hand in at University on the 14th of January, and then the 21st of January, the Deadline for my Dissertation. I managed to produce everthing i was asked to do, and now i have to wait until the 3rd of Feb do find out how well I did!? Or not well... We will see. On Wednesday, the day before I am celebrating my precious 22nd Birthday, which to be honest I have forgotten about immensely.
So now, Lets get started on updating.

sweet sweet christmas.

I did some intense baking today. Not only did I do one recipe, I did three, which I have never made before. Obviously, they do not look like the photos in the Baking book ( There is an image in the Bakingbook 'Merry christmas 1983') but I loved the visual aspect of the making of biscuits. It looks like playdo and the transformation from unbaked to baked is so interesting too.
I prefer the unbaked look of the cookies, however we all know, they do taste better cooked :)
So anyway, here are some images of my today's activitiy. They taste very nice, but some are pretty hard, but I have learned from 'askmum.com' that the skins of apples inside the cookie boxs will make them a little softer. I am going to try to take some photos or scan some imagery from those ancient Cooking/Baking books as some of the illustrations are just so beautiful I want to share them!

December 16, 2010

creeps of christmas eve.

I wondered around snowy lands and christmas decorated houses. And there they are, the creeps of Christmas. They appear very cute and innocent because of their size and the nice colours they wear. in Germany we call this Kindchenschema, (sceme of childlike characteristics)
But looks at these monsters! They have unhappy eyes or huge unhuman size noses or no fingers!
Creepy christmas faces, thats ecaxtly what they are.

snow white.

Only 8 days to go and its christmas day, at least in Germany. Thats were I am at the moment, taking some photos of the unbelievable masses of snow. It is indeed strange to have this much snow so early but I find it quite enjoyable. I am definately more of a summer person but untouched snow, it has something so calm and therapeutic about it.

December 5, 2010

It's christmas coming up and its time to make cards and presents. This year a ot of my cards are cut-outs, I love the way how you get a glance of whats inside through little windows. It's a little metaphor, so close to the New Year, looking through a window towards the new exciting year.

Some of the cards are unique, only produced once. Others I have multipied to use more often, for example the little fold up with the reindeer. I am using that drawing as inside fold ups in cards and also as a present tag. I produced this using the imprint from inside old letters. The colours work well i think, they look snowy, icy and cold, but also telling the the feeling around christmas when it is snowing. For me it was very important to mix medias, drawing, cutting, different paper and recycle. Some images show a series of Zine's I have produced, unfortunately I can not show the imagery and topics inside them, yet, as some of them will be christmas presents, and I dont want to spoil the surprise. I will upload them after the christmas asap, I hope you looking forward to it.

one last bit: Frohes Fest is german, and it means pretty much the same as
Happy Christmas / Happy holidays
